The
art department offers courses that provide you with the technical and
aesthetic instruction necessary for visual expression of all types.
Mount Mercy College provides an environment conducive to your total
involvement as a developing artist, with offerings in art history and
appreciation, studio work and art education.
There are three areas of concentration within the art major. A concentration
in fine arts will prepare you for careers involving the visual arts
or for further study in graduate or professional schools. An art education
concentration will prepare you to teach art in grades K-12. The graphic
design concentration will provide a strong background for commercial
or applied art careers. The department maintains studios for sculpture,
drawing, painting, textiles and printmaking. Photographic darkrooms,
a slide collection and two computer labs support the program.
In addition to academics, the McAuley Art Gallery schedules professional
exhibitions and visiting artists throughout the year, and the Art Sales
and Rental Gallery provides you the opportunity to exhibit and sell
your artwork. You will also be encouraged to join the Art Club. The
club also sponsors visiting artists, takes trips to major art centers
in the midwest, like the Chicago Art Institute, and aims to teach and
share art in the community.
Complimentary majors/minors include communication and the visual arts/business
interdisciplinary major.
