What classes should I take to enter the program?

If you are in high school and considering the biology program at Mount Mercy, you should have a strong interest in the sciences. Although the biology department does not have specific prerequisites, the College does recommend the following classes:

  • English, four years including literature
  • Mathematics, two or more years including algebra, algebra II and geometry
  • Social Studies, three or more years including American and European history
  • Science, two or more years of a laboratory science
  • Foreign language, two or more years
Please see the admission section of our current college catalog (pdf) for more information about requirements and admission procedures.

To research and improve the program, all entering and graduating majors are required to take an anonymous assessment examination based upon general biological knowledge. This exam will only be used to assess departmental strengths, goals, and weaknesses. Results of this exam will not appear on your records, nor will the results be used to determine academic progress. An attitudinal survey also will be taken by first-year and senior students.
