Honors
Program
The Honors Program offers accomplished students unique classes that
encourage the exploration of ideas beyond traditional academic boundaries
and strengthen skills that make students successful learners.
Honors general education
classes allow students to assume high levels of responsibility for their
learning. The classes are structured to encourage students to speak
out on issues and be more involved in the learning process. Honors general
education classes are offered during the fall, winter and spring terms.
Requirements
for First Year Students
- Minimum ACT composite
score of 26.
- Be in the first
quartile of their graduating class.
- Have a minimum
high school grade point average of 3.6.
First year students
who do not meet the stated criteria but believe they could do well in
the Honors Program may petition the Honors Advisory Council for a probationary
admittance to the Honors Program.
Honors Seminars
Honors
seminars are unique interdisciplinary seminars taught by faculty from
a variety of disciplines. Honors seminars are offered during the fall,
winter and spring terms, and are open to all students with at least
sophomore standing and a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
Transfer
Students
Transfer Students from Kirkwood Community College
All Kirkwood students who have completed a minimum of 24 semester hours;
have a minimum GPA of 3.4 at the end of their first year at Kirkwood;
and have completed a one credit hour Honors Project or a three credit
Honors Section course at Kirkwood with a grade of B or better are qualified
to receive the Mount Mercy College Honors Scholarship as follows:
- During their
second academic year at Kirkwood they will be permitted to take one
three-credit Honors course or seminar at Mount Mercy free of charge.
- Those who pass the Mount Mercy honors course or seminar
with a grade of B or better will be accepted into the Honors Program.
Transfers from Other
Colleges and Universities
Transfer students who have successfully completed honors courses at
other colleges and universities may petition for the courses to apply
towards Honors requirements at Mount Mercy College.
Recognition
Students graduating with Distinction in Honors
will be awarded honors cords to be worn at graduation and will receive
recognition on their transcripts and diplomas. Freshman, sophomore,
and junior students making satisfactory progress in the Honors Program
will be awarded early registration privileges.
