Medical Technology

By combining your interests in science and the medical profession, you are on track for a career in the rewarding field of medical technology. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology prepares you to work in a medical setting, and to perform important laboratory tests crucial to the well being of patients and to the advancement of medicine.

During your first three years of study, you will take med-tech curriculum courses along with challenging interesting liberal arts classes. In your fourth year, you will intern at St. Luke’s Hospital, a Mount Mercy-affiliated, AMA-approved hospital school of medical technology in Cedar Rapids. Your program there will include the study of bacteriology, parasitology, immunology, hematology, blood banking, and clinical chemistry. You will also study special chemistries such as drug detection and alcohol analysis and have experience with record keeping, administration, and the management of med-tech departments.

You also have the option of earning your degree first, and then completing your internship at any AMA-approved hospital school in the United States. When you complete your program, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) exam, you will be ready to work in a hospital, university research lab or private medical lab or clinic.
