As a political science
major at Mount Mercy, you will have the unique opportunity to pursue
your individual interests. The program seeks to meet your needs for
liberal education and career preparation. Our goal is to introduce you
to the knowledge and skills necessary for understanding and evaluating
the political world, to act effectively as a citizen, and to prepare
you for employment or advanced study.
First, you will begin with foundation courses in four major fields:
- American politics
- Comparative
politics
- International
politics
- Political theory
- Public policy
Additionally, an advanced
seminar is required, normally taken during your senior year. It is intended
to give you valuable experience in conducting independent study. The remaining
five courses required for a major in political science may be chosen by
YOU, to fit your intellectual interests, educational goals, or career
objectives. Two of these elective courses, must be taken from other departments;
they are intended to supplement your specific interests in political science
and strengthen preparation for your career or graduate study.
Complementary majors/minors include criminal justice, business, history,
international studies, criminal justice, secondary education, philosophy
and sociology.
Students majoring in political science affiliate with several social and
service clubs. They include the Student Government Association and the
Political Science Club.
