The Art Department and the Student Government Association sponsor a student-run
art organization, appropriately named "The Art Club". The Art Club is
open to all majors and sponsors several major events during the year as
well as many informal social events and field trips to exhibitions in
the area. The club does service work for the community and the college
as well. This includes supporting the art program for at-risk children
in at the Paul Engle Center and working with the Catherine McAuley Women's
Shelter and Center. The Club also sponsors the annual Art Auction, a sale
of student and faculty donated artwork sold to support the annual clean
up and restoration of the national historic folk art site on campus, The
Our Lady of Sorrows Grotto. The Art Club financially sponsors a visual
arts section in the PAHA publication of creative writing done by the English
Department each year. For our annual High School Art Day the Art Club
organizes workshops and pays the honorarium or airfare for a nationally
known artist to speak to the 200 High School visitors that come to campus
every April for a day. The club also has art department Christmas parties
and sales and sponsors an art film festival and an annual tunnel painting
competition.
