February 2005 Athletes of the Month

Matt Manuel
Senior
Men's Track & Field
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, Iowa
C.R. Kennedy H.S.

Matt broke his own school record in the weight throw three times during the month of February. At the Hilltop Invitational, he edged out his month-old mark with a throw of 52-02.75. A week later, Matt shattered it again, this time with a 52'11.50 toss at the Fighting Scot Invitational. Finally, against stiff NCAA Division I competition at the UNI-Dome Open, he crushed the mark by nearly three feet with a throw of 55-03.00. Matt placed in the top five in every meet he competed in during the indoor season, was the Midwest Classic Conference indoor champion in the weight throw and finished 14th at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Marci Clayton
Junior Forward
Women's Basketball
Hometown: Jesup, Iowa
Jesup H.S.

Marci had a great month for the Mustangs, averaging 17.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.9 steals per game as the team went 6-3 and reached the finals of the Midwest Classic Conference tournament for the first time since 1997. She scored 20 or more points in four of those games, including a 31-point, five-rebound, four-steal performance in an 80-66 win over St. Ambrose. In three MCC tournament games, Marci averaged 18.3 points, 11 rebounds and 4.7 steals per contest. She was an honorable mention NAIA Division II all-American, a first-team all-conference selection, a finalist for MCC Player of the Year, academic all-MCC and finished sixth in NAIA Division II in steals at 3.5 per game.
