May 2004 Athletes of the Month



Meredith Vander Zee

Senior/Women's Track & Field
Hometown: Rock Rapids, Iowa

Meredith was the women's Most Outstanding Performer at the Midwest Classic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships and competed in two events at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She scored in each of the 10 events she participated in at the league meet, winning the 400 meter dash and 400 meter hurdles and anchoring the 400 meter relay championship squad. Meredith was runner-up in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 1,600 meter relay and the javelin. At nationals she was 16th out of 18 runners in the 400 meter hurdles and placed 20th out of 31 athletes in the javelin.




Anthony Valera

Sophomore Third Baseman/Baseball
Hometown: Miami, Fla.

In six games in May, Anthony batted .316 with two home runs, two doubles, eight runs batted in and six stolen bases. He went 2-for-3 with four steals in a 5-2 victory over Grand View College and helped the Mustangs upset top-seeded St. Xavier University (Ill.) 10-5 in the first round of the NAIA Region VII Tournament. Anthony was 2-for-5 with a grand slam and a stolen base against the Cougars. He also drilled another home run while going 2-for-3 as Mount Mercy knocked Grand View out of the regional playoff with a 5-4 victory. Anthony, who set school records for grand slams and runs scored in a season, was all-Midwest Classic Conference, an NAIA All-Region VII selection and an honorable mention NAIA all-American.



Jason Drewelow

Senior/Men's Track & Field
Hometown: Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Jason was the men's Most Outstanding Performer at the Midwest Classic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships and competed at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. At the conference meet he won the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash, finished third in the 400 meter dash and helped the Mustangs to the 400 meter relay crown. Jason placed 23rd out of 34 runners in the 100 meters at nationals.
