CEDAR RAPIDS,
Iowa -- A two-run double by sophomore first baseman Peter Dietrich
and a strong outing by junior right-hander Tim Rodriquez powered
Mount Mercy College to a 2-1 victory over Coe College in non-conference
baseball on Monday at Ken Charipar Field.
This year's
version of the intra-city rivalry was in stark contrast to last
season's meeting, which saw the two teams combine for 37 runs
and 38 hits. On Monday night, the Kohawks (18-14) and Mustangs
(11-29) totaled just seven hits, including only two by Mount Mercy.
Coe starter Brock Yotty held the Mustangs hitless until the bottom
of the fifth inning.
After Yotty
hit Dietrich on the left elbow, it was ruled that Dietrich leaned
into the pitch. He stayed at the plate and lined a double off
the fence in left-center field that drove in both Mustang runs.
Meanwhile, Rodriquez took a shutout into the seventh inning before
the Kohawks managed an unearned run to cut Mount Mercy's lead
to 2-1.
Coe mounted
a rally in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs before junior
righty Logan Dicus came on to get Ryan Schisler to fly out to
left field to earn his sixth save. Rodriquez (2-2) overcame four
Mustang errors and four hit batsmen, scattering five hits over
8 2/3 innings while striking out six and walking a batter.
Mount Mercy
travels to Farley, Iowa, on Wednesday for a Midwest Collegiate
Conference doubleheader against Clarke College at 3:00 p.m. This
weekend, the Mustangs host a three-game set with Ashford University
at Ken Charipar Field. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1:00
p.m., while Sunday's Seniors Day festivities get a 2:00 p.m. start.
