Larsen, Marshall destined for nationals

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- For the second year in a row, senior Katie Larsen and sophomore Mallory Marshall will represent Mount Mercy College at the NAIA national meet after strong performances at the 2007 NAIA Region VII Cross Country Championships at Crow Creek Park.

Larsen earned all-region honors for the third time in her collegiate career, finishing eighth in the 5K with a time of 19:37. Marshall, the 2007 Midwest Collegiate Conference Harrier of the Year, repeated as an all-region performer after placing 10th in 19:44. Other Mustang runners included freshmen Kori Yotter (18th/20:11) and Erin Behan (25th/20:35) and seniors Katie Schlutz (26th/20:37), Heather Collum (38th/21:13), and Melissa Caster (45th/21:32).

Bethany Carr of Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) won the women's race with a time of 17:34. The Tigers and St. Xavier University (Ill.) shared the NAIA Region VII team championship with 41 points and both teams qualified for nationals. Mount Mercy was third with 87 points, followed by Illinois Tech with 103, and St. Ambrose University with 128.

On the men's side, senior Matt Hilby was Mount Mercy's top finisher, placing 21st with a time of 27:12 in the 8K. Next was senior Greg Blythe (40th/28:11), senior Bryan Johnson (48th/28:42), sophomore Scott Becker (53rd/29:04), sophomore Matt John (61st/30:12), senior Michael Daws (4th/30:45), and freshman Matt Clarke (65th/30:56).

Olivet Nazarene won the men's title as well, led by Kacey Carr. He crossed the finish line first in 24:45. The Tigers ran away with the championship, totaling 25 points. Illinois Tech was runner-up with 96. St. Xavier was third with 101 points, St. Ambrose fourth with 109. Mount Mercy placed eighth with 223 points.

The 2007 NAIA Cross Country Championships are on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 11:00 a.m. in Kenosha, Wis.
