Iowa -- Powered by four all-conference performers, the Mount Mercy
College women's cross country team won its second consecutive
league title while the Mustang men finished fourth at the 2007
Midwest Collegiate Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday
at Jones Park.
Mount Mercy
sophomore Mallory Marshall was named Women's Harrier of the Year
after claiming her second MCC championship in a row with a time
of 20:20 in the 5K. Her victory also extended a streak of 11 straight
titles by a Mount Mercy woman at the conference meet.
Joining Marshall
on the women's all-conference team was Jessica Olsen of St. Ambrose
University (2nd/20:23), freshman Kori Yotter of Mount Mercy (3rd/20:27),
senior Katie Larsen of Mount Mercy (4th/20:33), Mary Kate Dunne
of St. Ambrose (5th/20:41), Cassie Young of St. Ambrose (6th/20:50),
and freshman Erin Behan of Mount Mercy (7th/20:52). Other Mustang
runners included seniors Katie Schlutz (10th/21:15), Melissa Caster
(16th/21:51), and Heather Collum (17th/22:16).
The Mustangs
won the team title, their sixth overall and third in the past
five years, with 25 points. St. Ambrose was runner-up with 32
points, followed by Grand View College with 67.
St. Ambrose
sophomore Cliff Miles earned Men's Harrier of the Year honors
for his second consecutive conference championship with a time
of 27:41 in the 8K. Also landing on the all-conference team were
Brandon Bond of Grand View (2nd/28:05), Alex Flores of St. Ambrose
(3rd/28:29), senior Matt Hilby of Mount Mercy (4th/28:38), James
Hogan of St. Ambrose (5th/28:44), Juvy Hakizimana of Grand View
(6th/28:47), and Doug Brusich of St. Ambrose (7th/28:57). Other
Mustang finishers included senior Greg Blythe (12th/29:51), senior
Bryan Johnson (17th/30:25), sophomore Scott Becker (22nd/31:15),
sophomore Matthew John (24th/32:07), freshman Matthew Clarke (25th/32:18),
and senior Michael Daws (27th/33:08).
The Fighting
Bees took first place with 30 points. Grand View was runner-up
with 43, Clarke College was third with 70, and Mount Mercy fourth
with 79.
Next up will
be the NAIA Region VII Championships on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11:00
a.m. at Crow Creek in Davenport, Iowa, where the Mustangs will
attempt to qualify for the NAIA national meet. The 2007 NAIA Cross
Country Championships are on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 11:00 a.m.
in Kenosha, Wis.
