Mustang women second, men fourth at Mustang Gallop

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy College counted a pair of top 10 finishers in the women's 4K, and two top 20 runners in the men's 5K at the 14th Annual Mustang Gallop on Saturday at Jones Park.

Sophomore Mallory Marshall and senior Katie Larsen, both NAIA national meet qualifiers last season, placed fifth and sixth for the Mustangs. Marshall crossed the finish line in 16:22, while Larsen was right behind her in 16:24. Sophomore Chelsea Kvidera finished 12th in 17:16, senior Heather Collum 14th in 17:24, senior Melissa Caster 17th in 17:30, senior Katie Schlutz 20th in 17:40, and freshman Erin Behan 21st in 17:43.

With five top 10 runners, Cornell College won the women's team title with 32 points. Mount Mercy was next with 54 points, followed by Coe College with 81, the College of St. Mary with 103, NIACC with 104, and the Mount Mercy Alumni with 156. Coe's Ashley Schnell earned the women's individual crown with a time of 14:51.

Senior Bryan Johnson, an all-Midwest Classic Conference performer as a junior, was the top finisher for the Mount Mercy men, placing 14th with a time of 17:56 in the men's 5K. Sophomore Scott Becker finished 18th in 18:09, senior Matt Hilby 21st in 18:13, senior Greg Blythe 28th in 18:55, senior Michael Daws 29th in 18:56, freshman Matthew Clarke 30th in 19:01, and sophomore Matthew John 33rd in 19:54.

Coe, which had runners finishing fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh, claimed the men's team championship with 35 points. NIACC was second with 47 points, Cornell third with 78, Mount Mercy fourth with 110, Clarke College fifth with 112, and the Mount Mercy Alumni sixth with 149.

Mount Mercy travels to South Bend, Ind., for the National Catholic Championships hosted by Notre Dame University on Friday, Sept. 14, at 5:00 p.m.
