SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Mount Mercy College led NAIA Division II second-ranked Morningside College at halftime, but couldn't complete the upset bid and fell, 72-54, in non-conference men's basketball Thursday at the Rosen Verdoorn Center.

The visiting Mustangs (8-6) shot 45 percent from the floor in their final non-conference contest of the season and held a 35-33 advantage at the break after the host Mustangs (13-0) connected on only 37 percent of their field goal attempts in the opening period.

Morningside launched 18 3-pointers in the first half and made just five, but attempted only three treys after intermission, making two of those while shooting 54 percent. They finished at 44 percent for the game, compared to 39 percent for Mount Mercy. Morningside's victory ended Mount Mercy's two-game winning streak and tied their all-time series at 2-2.

Senior forward Curtis Kilgore scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Mount Mercy to a 38-35 advantage on the boards. Junior forward Travis Eagle joined Kilgore in double digits with 10 points. Senior guard James Scott contributed eight points, senior forward Brett McGee seven points and six rebounds.

Thomas Pargett and David Price scored 12 points each for Morningside, which is off to the best start in school history at 13-0. Jack Rother's all-around game included 10 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Nick Thompson tallied nine points and six boards, Matt Johnson had four of Morningside's 14 steals.

Mount Mercy is off until Wednesday, Jan.9, when the Mustangs go to Forest City, Iowa, to take on Waldorf College in Midwest Collegiate Conference action at 7:30 p.m. at Hanson Fieldhouse. The Mustangs head to Davenport, Iowa, for a league matchup with St. Ambrose University on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 3:00 p.m. at Lee Lohman Arena.
