DUBUQUE, Iowa -- DeMonte Bynum's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Clarke College a 75-74 victory over Mount Mercy College in Midwest Collegiate Conference men's basketball on Wednesday at the Kehl Center.

Mount Mercy, which led by as many as seven points in the second half, held a 74-72 advantage on a pair of free throws by junior forward Brandon Barnhart with 25 seconds to go before Bynum's heroics on the game's final possession.

The outcome dropped the Mustangs (12-13, 5-8 MCC) into a tie for eighth place in the league with Grand View College (9-17, 5-8 MCC) and allowed the Crusaders (16-11, 9-4 MCC) to maintain a two-game lead over Iowa Wesleyan College (12-14, 8-6 MCC) for second place in the MCC. Mount Mercy is 1-9 on the road this season, including 0-6 away from home in conference play.

Senior center Steve Smith went 8-for-8 from the foul line while scoring a season-high 23 points and snaring six rebounds for the Mustangs, who outscored the Crusaders, 28-17, at the free throw line. Senior forward Curtis Kilgore added 18 points, five boards, and three steals. Freshman forward Marty Tope tallied nine points and a career-high eight rebounds off the bench. Barnhart, the reigning MCC Player of the Week, finished with seven points and seven boards.

Bynum hit five triples and scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead the Crusaders. Michael Okpalaeze and Demarvis Russell joined him in double figures with 17 and 11 points, respectively. Brian Harris had nine points, seven rebounds, and a game-high five assists and five steals.

Mount Mercy hosts Ashford University (14-11, 6-7 MCC) in its final regular season home game on Saturday. Tip time on Seniors Day is 3:00 p.m. at Hennessey Recreation Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
