CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Ashford University took a 39-33 halftime lead and went on to defeat Mount Mercy College, 77-67, in a critical Midwest Collegiate Conference men's basketball game on Seniors Day Saturday at Hennessey Recreation Center.

Ashford's win moved the Saints (15-11, 7-7 MCC) into fourth place in the MCC and dropped the Mustangs (12-14, 5-9 MCC) to eighth place with two games remaining. Mount Mercy needs a pair of victories next week to avoid a first round play-in game in the league's postseason tournament, which begins on Monday, Feb. 25.

Senior forward Curtis Kilgore scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, both game highs, for the Mustangs. Junior forwards Brandon Barnhart and Travis Eagle and junior guard Lucas Blood added nine points each. Barnhart also collected a game-high three steals and freshman forward Marty Tope snared five boards as Mount Mercy outrebounded Ashford, 33-27.

Cash Bimm's 20 points led five Saints in double figures. He also had a team-high seven rebounds. Daniel Joiner and Matt Weber chipped in 13 points apiece, Byron Emerson 12, and Justin Jackson 10. Emerson also dealt a game-high four assists.

Mount Mercy finishes the regular season on the road next week. The Mustangs travel to NAIA Division II fifth-ranked William Penn University (24-5, 12-3 MCC) on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. showdown at Penn Gym in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They head to Viterbo University (Wis.) (8-19, 3-11 MCC) on Saturday to take on the V-Hawks at 3:00 p.m. at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium in La Crosse, Wis.
