CEDAR RAPIDS,
Iowa -- The Mount Mercy College men's basketball team built a
15-point lead in the second half and held on to defeat Viterbo
University (Wis.), 68-65, in Midwest Collegiate Conference play
Saturday at Hennessey Recreation Center.
For the second
game in a row, the Mustangs (10-10, 3-5 MCC) led by double digits
in the second period before letting their opponent close the gap.
But unlike Wednesday's late-game collapse in a 91-88 loss to NAIA
Division II fifth-ranked William Penn University, Mount Mercy
did just enough down the stretch on Saturday to end a two-game
skid.
Junior forward
Brandon Barnhart posted his first career double-double with a
team-high 17 points and career-high 12 rebounds. Senior center
Steve Smith added 11 points and five boards off the bench for
the Mustangs. Junior guard Lucas Blood tallied 10 points, senior
forward Curtis Kilgore eight. Barnhart and senior guard James
Scott each dished out three assists.
Scott Buschman
also recorded a double-double with a game-high 19 points and 12
rebounds. Eric Ambrose chipped in 17 points, six boards, and three
steals. Drew Knutson joined them in double figures with 12 points
to go along with five rebounds.
Mount Mercy
takes on Grand View College in league play Monday at 7:30 p.m.
at Charles Johnson Wellness Center in Des Moines, Iowa. The Mustangs
battle Iowa Wesleyan College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Ruble
Arena in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
