Mercy claims Kiwanis Classic

MOUNT PLEASANT,
Iowa -- Led by senior forwards Curtis Kilgore and Brett McGee,
Mount Mercy College was the only team to go undefeated at the
Kiwanis Classic men's basketball tournament hosted by Iowa Wesleyan
College.
The Mustangs
(5-1) trounced Ozark Christian College (Mo.), 83-38, on Friday
and came from behind to defeat Central Methodist University (Mo.),
80-72, on Saturday at Ruble Arena. Kilgore, who totaled 39 points
and 14 rebounds, and McGee, who tallied 32 points, 11 boards,
and 12 assists, landed on the all-tournament team.
In all, 19
players saw the court for Mount Mercy and 13 of them scored in
Friday's win over Ozark Christian. Kilgore led the way with a
game-high 21 points and nine rebounds. McGee added 14 points,
four boards, and a game-high eight assists. Junior forward Brandon
Barnhart joined them in double digits with 11 points to go along
with six rebounds.
The Mustangs
overcame 22 turnovers and 47 percent free throw shooting to defeat
Central Methodist on Saturday. A 32-14 run early in the second
half gave Mount Mercy a nine-point lead with 7:34 to go. Then,
after the Eagles tied the game at 69-69 with 4:16 remaining, the
Mustangs ended the contest with an 11-3 spurt to get the victory.
Kilgore and McGee scored 18 points apiece and senior center Steve
Smith chipped in 14 points and six boards off the bench. Barnhart
finished with 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists. McGee
grabbed a team-best seven boards and dished out four assists.
Senior guard Rodney Jackson contributed six points and six rebounds,
senior guard Dillon Allen six points and a game-high seven assists.
Next up for
Mount Mercy is an intra-city showdown with Coe College on Tuesday
at 7:30 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Kohawks
have won two in a row in the series, including an 82-62 decision
over the Mustangs last season at Hennessey Recreation Center.
This weekend, Mount Mercy hosts Loras College on Sunday at 7:00
p.m. at Hennessey.
