Mustangs Host North Country Classic, Finish Fifth

MARION, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy College men's golf team hosted the North Country Classic last weekend, finishing in a tie for fifth place with William Woods University (Mo.). A second Mustang squad, Mount Mercy Gold, also competed in the 20-team field, placing 17th.

Sophomore Ryan Flugum scored rounds of 76 and 70 to finish in a tie for eighth place with a 2-over-par 146 for the Mount Mercy "Blue" squad that took fifth. Teammate Scot Glasford, a junior, was 4-over for the tournament to finish in a tie for 12th place at 148. Other members of the Mount Mercy "Blue" team were senior Brock Ferry (79-77=156), sophomore Adam Tiedt (80-77=157) and senior Aaron Tank (78-81=159).

The Mount Mercy "Gold" squad was led by senior Jared Rima, who tied for 24th after rounds of 80 and 73 gave him a 153 total. Senior Duane Price shot 79-81 to finish at 160, junior Dustin Moser went 89-81 for a 170 score, freshman Justin Leas put together rounds of 85 and 86 to sit at 171 and freshman Travis Dirks ended up at 174 with rounds of 90 and 84.

A pair of Midwest Classic Conference rivals claimed the top two spots in the team standings. St. Ambrose University won the championship with scores of 295 and 296 for a 591 total after 36 holes. Grand View College finished second at 599 (298-301). Lindenwood University (Mo.) came in third at 602 (305-297), Illinois Wesleyan University fourth at 603 (298-305). Mount Mercy Blue (310-295), which had the best team score on day two, and William Woods (303-302) tied for fifth at 605. Mount Mercy Gold was 17th at 652 (333-319).

Drew Chuipek of St. Ambrose, who opened with a 4-under 68, was medalist after a second round 74 gave him a 142 total and a one-stroke victory over James Lemley (70-73=143) of William Woods and Stephen Ford (65-78=143) of Marian College (Ind.). Ford's 7-under 65 in round one was the best score of the tournament.

Mount Mercy heads to Oskaloosa for the William Penn University Invitational this weekend. Round one starts on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Elmhurst Country Club, while day two begins at 8:00 a.m. at Edmundson Golf Course.
