Ambrose Wins MCC Title; Mustangs Finish Sixth

Iowa -- St. Ambrose University overcame another windy day at Hunters
Ridge Golf Course in Marion, Iowa, to win the Midwest Classic
Conference Men's Golf Tournament by six strokes over Iowa Wesleyan
College. After an opening-round 299, the Fighting Bees produced
a 303 score on day two for a 602 total.
The runner-up
Tigers finished at 608 after a final-round 303. Grand View College,
in second place after round one, shot 319 on Sunday and fell to
third at 621. Waldorf College finished fourth at 642, William
Penn University fifth at 646, Mount Mercy College sixth at 652
and Ashford University seventh at 653.
David Roan
of Grand View edged first-round leader Drew Chuipek of St. Ambrose
for medalist honors. Roan, in fourth place after an opening-round
73, carded an even-par 72 on Sunday to finish at 145. Chuipek,
the only player to break par this weekend with a 1-under 71 on
Saturday, shot a final-round 75 to end up at 146. Jordan Crampton
of Iowa Wesleyan, who fired a 72 on day one, also put up a 75
on Sunday to finish third at 147. Dusty Drenth of St. Ambrose
carded matching 74s this weekend to place fourth at 148, followed
by Nathan Fisher of William Penn in fifth place at 150 after rounds
of 74 and 76.
Roan, Chuipek,
Crampton, Drenth and Fisher were named all-conference. Chuipek
was named 2006-07 MCC Player of the Year while Jeff Griebel of
St. Ambrose was named 2006-07 MCC Coach of the Year by a vote
of league coaches.
Sophomore
Shane Parmenter followed up an opening day 81 with a 79 and tied
for 14th with a 160 total. Senior Joe Whitman (80-81) and sophomore
Justin Leas (82-79) tied for 16th at 161. Junior Bryan Von Roden
(88-82) tied for 30th at 170 and senior Ryan Flugum (88-83) finished
32nd at 171.
