BURLINGTON,
Iowa -- Freshman midfielder Petar Triva made one of the most impressive
debuts in Mount Mercy College men's soccer history on Saturday,
racking up eight points to lead the Mustangs to a 5-2 victory
over Calumet College (Ind.) in their season opener at the Iowa
Wesleyan College Tournament at the Burlington Rec Plex.
Mount Mercy
(1-0-0) held a 2-0 lead by halftime en route to their third season-opening
win in the past four years. The first of Triva's three goals came
on a free kick only seven minutes into the game after junior forward
Nick Miller was fouled just outside the box. Triva assisted sophomore
midfielder Zlatko Tomic's goal in the 31st minute to end the first-half
scoring. Freshman goalkeeper Matt Quinlan saved a pair of shots
while holding the Crimson Wave (0-2-0) scoreless in the first
half.
Calumet cut
its deficit to 2-1 on a successful free kick in the 54th minute,
but the Mustangs answered six minutes later when Triva and Tomic
teamed up for the second time to make it 3-1 in the 60th minute.
The Crimson Wave again got within a goal in the 73rd minute before
Triva tacked on two more scores over the final 17 minutes to put
the game away for Mount Mercy. Tomic assisted Triva's second goal
of the day in the 77th minute, while junior midfielder John Hauskins
set up Triva for the hat trick in the 89th minute. Freshman Lucas
Altman played the second half for the Mustangs, recording three
saves in goal.
The Mustangs
