Mustangs set school mark in win at Cornell

Posted 10/14/07 10:04 PM

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- Junior forward Nick Miller added three more goals to his team-leading total and senior midfielder Clint Coggins notched his first collegiate goal and assist as the Mount Mercy College men's soccer team set a single-game scoring record in a 9-2 non-conference victory over Cornell College on Sunday.

On a chilly, soggy day, it was all Mustangs from the start. They held a 2-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the match on goals by Miller and senior midfielder Chad Hollmer. A pair of scores by sophomore forward Bryan Jahava and another by Miller made it 5-0 at intermission. Miller completed his hat trick with one more goal in the 49th minute, followed by the first career goal for Coggins five minutes later. After the Rams (1-9-1) got on the board, Coggins set up Hollmer's second goal in the 66th minute and junior midfielder John Hauskins ended the scoring with his first goal of the year in the 87th minute.

Mount Mercy (5-8-1) wraps up the regular season with a pair of road games this week. The Mustangs travel to Clinton, Iowa, to battle Ashford University in the final Midwest Collegiate Conference match of the season on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, Mount Mercy goes to Galesburg, Ill., for a non-conference game against Knox College (Ill.) at noon.
