Mercy beats Ashford; Mustangs seeded seventh in MCC

CLINTON,
Iowa -- In a Midwest Collegiate Conference finale on Tuesday,
junior forward Nick Miller scored twice and sophomore forward
Zlatko Tomic added another as the Mount Mercy College men's soccer
team defeated Ashford University, 3-1.
Miller, who
leads the Mustangs with 13 goals this season, notched Mount Mercy's
first two scores against the Saints. He found the back of the
net in the 22nd minute and again in the 48th minute to give the
Mustangs a 2-0 lead. After Ashford's Eddie Garza scored in the
53rd minute, Tomic gave Mount Mercy a little breathing room with
his fifth goal of the year in the 65th minute.
The Mustangs
wrap up the regular season at Knox College (Ill.) on Saturday
at noon in Galesburg, Ill, then open the 2007 MCC Men's Soccer
Tournament on Monday. Seventh-seeded Mount Mercy (6-8-1, 3-5-0
MCC) will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to battle second-seeded
Grand View College (11-5-1, 7-1-0 MCC) at 1:00 p.m. Monday's other
quarterfinals include eighth-seeded Waldorf College (6-10-0, 1-7-0
MCC) at top-seeded St. Ambrose University (11-4-2, 7-1-0 MCC),
fifth-seeded William Penn University (6-5-5, 3-3-2 MCC) at fourth-seeded
Iowa Wesleyan College (5-11-1, 4-3-1 MCC), and sixth-seeded Ashford
(7-7-1, 3-4-1 MCC) at third-seeded Clarke College (7-10-0, 5-3-0
MCC).
The semifinals
on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 1:00 p.m. will feature Waldorf or St.
Ambrose against William Penn or Iowa Wesleyan and Ashford or Clarke
versus Mount Mercy or Grand View. The higher seed hosts each match
throughout the tournament, including the championship game on
