Mustangs win regular season finale

Posted 10/21/07 9:10 PM

GALESBURG, Ill. -- Mount Mercy College overcame an early deficit to defeat Knox College (Ill.), 4-2, in non-conference action on Saturday. It was the final regular season match for the Mustangs, who open the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Monday.

The hosts got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute on a goal by Jeff Wozencraft. But the Mustangs answered quickly, with senior midfielder Chad Hollmer setting up sophomore midfielder Derek Oja's goal in the 12th minute to tie the match. Freshman midfielder Petar Triva's score gave Mount Mercy a short-lived 2-1 advantage, which was erased only a minute later by the Prairie Fire's Abasam Onyia. Junior forward Nick Miller, on an assist by Triva, put the Mustangs up, 3-2, minutes before halftime. Miller assisted sophomore forward Zlatko Tomic's goal in the 49th minute to end the scoring.

Seventh-seeded Mount Mercy (7-8-1, 3-5-0 MCC) travels to Des Moines, Iowa, for an MCC tournament matchup with second-seeded Grand View College (11-5-1, 7-1-0 MCC) on Monday at 1:00 p.m. The league's other quarterfinals include eighth-seeded Waldorf College (7-10-0, 1-7-0 MCC) at top-seeded St. Ambrose University (11-4-2, 7-1-0 MCC), fifth-seeded William Penn University (6-5-5, 3-3-2 MCC) at fourth-seeded Iowa Wesleyan College (5-11-1, 4-3-1 MCC), and sixth-seeded Ashford (8-7-1, 3-4-1 MCC) at third-seeded Clarke College (7-10-0, 5-3-0 MCC).

The semifinals on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 1:00 p.m. will feature Waldorf or St. Ambrose against William Penn or Iowa Wesleyan and Ashford or Clarke versus Mount Mercy or Grand View. The higher seed hosts each match throughout the tournament, including the championship game on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 1:00 p.m. For a playoff bracket and updates throughout the tournament, click here.
