DES
MOINES, Iowa -- Seventh-seeded
Mount Mercy College gave second-seeded Grand View College all
it wanted and then some, but the host Vikings scored on a corner
kick with just over five minutes left in the second overtime and
defeated the Mustangs, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Midwest
Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Monday.
Grand View
grabbed an early lead when Mirsad Kazic scored seven minutes into
the match. Mount Mercy drew even at 1-1 on freshman Petar Triva's
goal in the 18th minute on an assist by sophomore midfielder Derek
Oja. The game remained tied until the second period when junior
forward Nick Miller, assisted by sophomore forward Bryan Jahava,
gave the Mustangs a 2-1 advantage in the 50th minute.
The Vikings
avoided a 3-1 deficit when Mount Mercy hit the post moments later,
then tied the match at 2-2 on an Augustine Faiz goal in the 65th
minute. After 40 scoreless minutes and with a shootout looming
to decide who would advance to the MCC semifinals, Lyall Menzies
angled in a corner kick in the 105th minute to keep Grand View's
tournament title hopes alive. The Mustangs finish the season at
7-9-1, the most wins for Mount Mercy since 2004.
In Thursday's
semifinals, Grand View (12-5-1) hosts Ashford University (9-7-1)
in Des Moines while top-seeded St. Ambrose University (12-4-2)
hosts fourth-seeded Iowa Wesleyan College (6-11-1) in Davenport,
Iowa. The championship game will be hosted by the higher seeded
on Sunday. For a playoff bracket and updates throughout the tournament,
