RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy College Head Coach Amir Hadzic has
announced the addition of 11 newcomers to the men's soccer program
this fall.
Seven are
freshmen, including four from the state of Iowa. Tanner Lamb and
Kevin Schons prepped at Linn-Mar High School, Lucas Altman at
Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School, and Derek Havel at West Liberty
High School. Matt Quinlan hails from Lee's Summit, Mo., and Archbishop
O'Hara High School, while Ivan Bogdan and Petar Triva are from
Split, Croatia.
Lamb, a defender
and midfielder, was a three-year letterwinner at Linn-Mar. He
was a two-time all-Mississippi Valley Conference performer and
played for the nationally-ranked CRSA under-18 boys' soccer team.
Schons is a defender who played four years for the Lions.
Altman and
Quinlan will compete for the starting goalkeeper spot. Altman
was a three-year letterwinner at Kennedy and played soccer at
the Heartland Soccer Club. Quinlan was a two-year starter in goal
for O'Hara. He was the team's MVP as a junior after earning second-team
all-West Central Conference honors. As a senior, Quinlan helped
the Celtics to their first district title in five years and garnered
first-team all-conference, first-team all-district, and first-team
all-region honors. A first-team all-conference baseball player
as well, Quinlan will also play baseball for the Mustangs.
Havel, Bogdan,
and Triva are midfielders. Havel was a multi-sport standout at
West Liberty who played for the Iowa Soccer Club in Iowa City.
He will also play basketball at Mount Mercy. Bogdan and Triva
trained at the Hajduk Split Soccer Academy and were Youth Regional
Team members.
Nick Miller,
Derek Oja, Jeff Wagner, and Alexander Watson are transferring
to Mount Mercy. Miller, who prepped at Cedar Rapids Prairie High
School, returns to the Mustangs from the University of Northern
Iowa. He was an all-Midwest Classic Conference forward after leading
Mount Mercy in scoring in 2004 and 2005.
Oja was a
freshman midfielder at Upper Iowa University in 2006. He was a
three-year letterwinner at Cedar Rapids Washington High School,
helping the Warriors to a seventh-place finish at the state tournament
his senior year. Oja was a second-team all-Metro and honorable
mention all-Mississippi Valley Conference pick that season and
earned a spot on the 2006 Iowa East vs. West All-Star Cup.
Wagner and
Watson arrive at Mount Mercy from Kirkwood Community College.
Wagner, a midfielder, was a four-year letterwinner and two-time
all-Mississippi Valley Conference and all-Metro standout for Cedar
Rapids Jefferson High School. He also played for the Heartland
Soccer Club. Watson was also a four-year letterwinner for Jefferson.
