RAPIDS, Iowa -- Powered by three first-period goals, Upper Iowa
University held on to defeat Mount Mercy College, 3-2, handing
the Mustangs their first loss of the season Thursday at Lower
Kingston Field.
The visiting
Peacocks (2-5-0) notched a pair of goals in the 28th and 32nd
minutes to take a 2-0 lead before sophomore forward Bryan Jahava
got the Mustangs (2-1-1) right back in it in the 35th minute with
help from sophomore midfielder Derek Oja. But seven minutes later,
Upper Iowa padded its lead again when Octavio Gomez assisted Jacob
Rasbeck to give the Peacocks a 3-1 advantage at intermission.
Mount Mercy
shut down the Upper Iowa offense in the second half and got within
3-2 when junior forward Nick Miller set up senior Chad Hollmer
in the 87th minute, but the Mustangs couldn't tie it up in the
final three minutes and lost to the Peacocks for the second time
in their last three meetings. Mount Mercy freshman goalkeeper
Matt Quinlan stopped eight of 11 shots on goal, while Upper Iowa
keeper Andy Youde saved four of six Mustang shots in the contest.
Mount Mercy
has eight days off before the Sal Vaccaro Invitational hosted
by North Central College (Ill.) Sept. 14-15 in Naperville, Ill.
The Mustangs battle Robert Morris (Ill.) on Friday at 6:00 p.m.,
then the host Cardinals on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
