Mustangs Head to Viterbo on Tuesday

Posted 4/2/07 3:35 PM

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- After a challenging week weather-wise, Mount Mercy College will head north on Tuesday for a Midwest Classic Conference softball doubleheader at Viterbo University (Wis.). Game time is 3:00 p.m. at Viterbo's outdoor sports complex in La Crosse, Wis.

Despite poor weather conditions, the Mustangs managed to squeeze in five games last week, including an MCC opener against Waldorf College on March 28 at the Kirkwood Sports Complex in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The NAIA 17th-ranked Warriors overpowered Mount Mercy, sweeping the Mustangs, 11-0 and 4-0.

Mount Mercy rebounded for a non-conference, home split with NCAA Division II Upper Iowa University on March 29. After falling, 10-4, in Thursday's opener, the Mustangs earned a 2-1 victory in game two. Junior right-hander Katie Strain (3-3) tossed four innings of one-hit ball and junior righty Meredith O'Brien went the final three frames for her second save of the season. Strain's RBI single in the bottom of the second and junior shortstop Ashley Frericks' run-scoring single in the bottom of the third proved to be the difference for the Mount Mercy.

St. Ambrose University and Mount Mercy couldn't escape the wet weather on Saturday, although they tried. The venue for the MCC twinbill was switched from Cedar Rapids to Davenport, Iowa, in hopes that the two teams could get both games in. After a 9-1 Queen Bee victory in game one, rain washed away the nightcap. Sophomore catcher Sarah Ryan had two of Mount Mercy's five hits in the opener, while Strain (3-4) took the loss after allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits in five innings for the Mustangs.

Sunday's scheduled doubleheader with Iowa Wesleyan College was also wiped out by weather and will be rescheduled later this month. After Tuesday's MCC action at Viterbo, Mount Mercy returns home for a six-game homestand. The Mustangs host William Penn University on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and Grand View College on Saturday at noon at the Kirkwood Sports Complex. Mount Mercy wraps up that homestand against Ashford University on Wednesday, April 11, at 5:00 p.m.
