CEDAR RAPIDS,
Iowa -- Seniors Tara Herzberger, Meredith O'Brien, Katie Strain,
and Mary Wells received honorable mention all-Midwest Collegiate
Conference honors by a vote of league coaches.
Herzberger,
a second baseman, led the Mount Mercy College softball team with
52 base hits, a .388 batting average, and 33 runs scored. She
also drove in 15 runs and set a single-season school record with
22 stolen bases.
O'Brien, a
right-hander, led the Mustangs with a 12-11 mark in 22 starts.
She worked 154 innings, striking out 89 while walking 41 with
a 2.68 earned run average. O'Brien also hit .228 with eight RBIs.
Strain, also
a right-hander, posted a team-best 2.20 ERA while going 9-7 in
18 starts. She struck out 73 and walked 59 in 101 2/3 innings.
At the plate, Strain batted .288 with a home run, team-high two
triples, and six doubles. She was third on the squad with 16 RBIs.
Wells, a third
baseman, was Mount Mercy's second-leading hitter with 33 base
hits and a .314 batting average. She also drove in 12 runs and
was a perfect 14-for-14 in stolen bases.
Paige Jensen
of Grand View College was the 2008 MCC Player of the Year. Waldorf
College, the 2008 regular season and conference tournament champs,
had the 2008 MCC Pitcher and Coach of the Year in Chelsea Dougherty
and Denny Gilbertson.
