CEDAR
RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Mount Mercy College softball team opened its
home schedule over the weekend, splitting four games against Waldorf
College and Viterbo University (Wis.) at Third Base Sports Park.
Waldorf scored
two runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 2-0 victory over
Mount Mercy in Saturday's opener, then needed an extra frame to
knock off the Mustangs, 2-1, in game two. Warriors starter Chelsey
Dougherty tossed a no-hitter in game one to outduel senior right-hander
Meredith O'Brien, who went the distance, giving up one earned
run on three hits while striking out five.
Mustang hurlers
Katie Strain and Kortney Cole didn't allow an earned run in the
nightcap, but Waldorf got the extra-inning win on Megan Forster's
RBI single in the top of the eighth. Strain scattered four hits
over 4 2/3 innings, while Cole allowed four hits in 3 1/3 innings
of relief.
O'Brien (5-3)
tossed another gem in a 4-1 victory over Viterbo in Sunday's opener.
She struck out five and allowed just a single earned run in a
complete-game, four-hitter. Senior catcher Danyl Spivey went 2-for-3
and senior second baseman Tara Herzberger, freshman center fielder
Laura Baldus, and Strain each drove in a run for the Mustangs.
Strain (4-2)
was outstanding again in game two, holding the V-Hawks to an unearned
run and only two hits while striking out four in seven innings.
Baldus and freshman first baseman Lisa Butler had two hits apiece
and Baldus, Strain, and junior Molly Brown drove in three of Mount
Mercy's four runs in the 4-1 win.
The Mustangs
(10-6, 2-2 MCC), who have already surpassed last season's win
total (9), travel to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, on Thursday to take
on Iowa Wesleyan College at 5:00 p.m. The league doubleheader
was postponed from March 27 due to inclement weather.
