CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy College senior Kaylon Spengler and sophomore Katie Larsen were among the first-ever recipients of the Midwest Classic Conference Men's and Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards, the league announced Monday.

Each week throughout the spring, the MCC will honor four student athletes for performances on the track and in the field. There will be male and female "track" athletes of the week, as well as male and female "field" athletes of the week based on performances in field events. Ashford University's Aaron Burns and Valerie Boles were the MCC Field Athletes of the Week for Jan. 23.

Mount Mercy opened the 2006 indoor season at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Open Saturday in Platteville, Wis. Spengler placed third in the men's 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:52.43, while Larsen was fourth in the women's 5,000 meters in 20:06.42. Both finishes ranked among the best 5K performances in school history.

In addition to Spengler and Larsen, Mount Mercy athletes produced top five finishes in seven events. Diana Meyer was third in the 200 meter dash (:28.07) and fifth in the finals of the 55 meter dash (:07.84). Tera Behning came in fourth in the mile run (5:55.85) and 3,000 meter run (12:05.70). Channing Weigel placed fourth in the 400 meter dash (1:05.56) and sixth in the long jump (14'-9.75"). Christine French finished fourth in the long jump (15'-3.50"), while the Mount Mercy women's 4x400 meter relay squad of French, Weigel, Katrina Burke and Katie Schlutz claimed fifth place with a time of 4:49.36.
