Sets School Mark, Qualifies for Indoor National Meet

MOUNT VERNON,
Iowa -- On a day that featured a pair of record-breaking performances,
Mount Mercy College freshman Alyssa Maher qualified for the NAIA
indoor national meet with a school-record run in the 55 meter
hurdles at Saturday's Hilltop Invitational hosted by Cornell College.
Maher's efforts
also earned her the honor of Midwest Classic Conference Female
Track Athlete of the Week for Feb. 5. She finished fifth in the
finals of the 55 meter hurdles with a time of :09.01, but it was
her preliminary time of :08.90 that set a school mark and surpassed
the NAIA qualifying standard for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field
National Champinships.
Junior Katie
Larsen also broke the school record in the one mile run. She finished
in 5:32.93, shattering the old standard of 5:36.53. Larsen's effort
in the 3,000 meter run was also one of the top 10 performances
in school history. Her time of 11:21.73 is the seventh-best at
Mount Mercy.
Senior Bryan
Jones and junior Bryan Johnson provided the top performances for
the Mustang men. Jones finished sixth in the 600 meter dash in
1:26.31, while Johnson placed 11th in the 3,000 meter run with
a time of 10:12.84.
Mount Mercy
continues its indoor season on Friday at the Dennis Young Invitational
hosted by Buena Vista University at 3:00 p.m. in Storm Lake, Iowa.
After that, the Mustangs head to the UNI-Dome Open on Friday,
Feb. 16, at 3:00 p.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
