Posted 2/6/07 9:09 AM

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- On a day that featured a pair of record-breaking performances, Mount Mercy College freshman Alyssa Maher qualified for the NAIA indoor national meet with a school-record run in the 55 meter hurdles at Saturday's Hilltop Invitational hosted by Cornell College.

Maher's efforts also earned her the honor of Midwest Classic Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week for Feb. 5. She finished fifth in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles with a time of :09.01, but it was her preliminary time of :08.90 that set a school mark and surpassed the NAIA qualifying standard for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Champinships.

Junior Katie Larsen also broke the school record in the one mile run. She finished in 5:32.93, shattering the old standard of 5:36.53. Larsen's effort in the 3,000 meter run was also one of the top 10 performances in school history. Her time of 11:21.73 is the seventh-best at Mount Mercy.

Senior Bryan Jones and junior Bryan Johnson provided the top performances for the Mustang men. Jones finished sixth in the 600 meter dash in 1:26.31, while Johnson placed 11th in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:12.84.

Mount Mercy continues its indoor season on Friday at the Dennis Young Invitational hosted by Buena Vista University at 3:00 p.m. in Storm Lake, Iowa. After that, the Mustangs head to the UNI-Dome Open on Friday, Feb. 16, at 3:00 p.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
