GRINNELL,
Iowa -- Freshman Justin Waring broke the school record in the
1,500 meter run and the men's 4x800 meter relay team set a new
mark at the Dick Young Classic hosted by Grinnell College on Saturday.
Waring, who
set a school record in the 800 meter run a week earlier at the
Cornell College Invitational, surpassed Ryan Scheckel's previous
mark in the 1,500 meters by less than half a second. Waring's
time was 4:11.60 at Grinnell, while Scheckel's 10-year-old school
record was 4:11.97.
Mount Mercy's
4x800 relay squad shattered the school mark by more than eight
seconds. The Mustangs finished in 8:01.68, surpassing the record
set earlier this spring at the Viking Olympics at Augustana College
(Ill.).
Senior Katie
Larsen and freshmen Erin Behan and Kelsey Hansen recorded some
of the top performances in school history as well. Larsen ran
the third-fastest time in the 5,000 meter run, finishing in 18:45.67.
Behan's 40:05.80 in the 10,000 meter run also ranks third all-time,
while Hansen's 112'-3" toss in the hammer has her in fifth
on the all-time list.
This week's
schedule includes the Drake Relays Thursday-Saturday in Des Moines,
Iowa, as well as the Kip Janvrin Simpson College Open on Friday
at 2:00 p.m. in Indianola, Iowa.
