Katie Larsen

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy College senior Katie Larsen has been named Midwest Collegiate Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 10,000 meter run at the Central College Invitational on Saturday in Pella, Iowa.

It's the fifth such honor for Larsen this year, including the indoor season, but the first since the start of the outdoor season in late March. She won the 10,000 meters at Central with a conference-leading time of 39:52.80. That is also second in school history behind Mallory Marshall's 39:49.36 at Augustana College (Ill.) in 2007.

Other terrific performances on the women's side included a second-place finish in the 10,000 meters by freshman Erin Behan, whose 41:07.30 ranks fourth on Mount Mercy's all-time list. Sophomore Alyssa Maher was fifth in the 100 meter hurdles in :15.54, which is tied for seventh in school history. Senior Katie Schlutz took fifth in the javelin with a toss of 106'-00". Freshman Kelsey Hansen's 113'-7" toss in the hammer throw was second all-time, and eight feet short of her school record set at the Viking Olympics on March 29.

On the men's side, senior Matt Hilby finished third in the javelin with a toss of 158'-4". Freshman Justin Waring posted the fourth-best time in school history in the 800 meter run, finishing in 1:58.17. Freshman Aaron Stephens came close to the school record in the high jump, leaping 6'-2" for the second-best height all-time. Brian Till set the mark of 6'-3" at Loras College in 1997.

The Mustangs compete at this weekend's Cornell College Invitational at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Mount Mercy goes to the Dick Young Classic hosted by Grinnell College on Saturday, April 19, at 9:00 a.m. in Grinnell, Iowa.
