CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy College sophomore Alyssa Maher opened the 2008 season in style, earning Midwest Collegiate Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week honors after setting a school record and qualifying for the NAIA indoor national meet in the 55 meter hurdles at Saturday's University of Wisconsin-Platteville Open.

Maher, who ran a :09.03 in the finals to win the 55 meter hurdles, shattered her own school record in the event with a time of :08.79 in the preliminaries. That preliminary time also qualified her for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 55 meter hurdles for the second year in a row. The national meet is March 6-8 in Johnson City, Tenn.

Mount Mercy is off this weekend, but will be back in action at the Hilltop Open hosted by Cornell College on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 10:00 a.m. at the Small Multi-Sport Center in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
