qualifies for NAIA outdoor nationals

CEDAR RAPIDS,
Iowa -- Mount Mercy College senior Katie Schlutz qualified for
the NAIA outdoor national meet in the marathon based on her school-record
performance at Saturday's Midland Lutheran College (Neb.) Half-Marathon
in Fremont, Neb.
Schlutz finished
in 1:35:38, breaking Lynnette Montang's mark of 1:36:40 set at
the Drake Relays in 1998. She reached the qualifying standard
of 1:36:00 and will compete in the marathon at the 2008 NAIA Outdoor
Track & Field Championships May 22-24 in St. Louis, Mo.
Mount Mercy
seniors Greg Blythe and Matt Hilby also ran the half-marathon
at Midland Lutheran, and both surpassed the previous school record
in the event set by Lance Cook at the Drake Relays in 1994. Blythe
is the new record holder with a time of 1:18:54, while Hilby is
second in school history after running the event in 1:21:38.
The Mount
Mercy men and women compete at the Easter Open, hosted by Central
Methodist University (Mo.), at 4:00 p.m. on Friday in Fayette,
Mo.
