MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -- Junior guard Kelli Dabroski scored the final eight points of the game at the free throw line for Mount Mercy College as the Mustangs hung on to defeat Cornell College, 60-56, in non-conference women's basketball on Monday at the Small Multi-Sport Center.

Mount Mercy scored the first 10 points of the game and it took Cornell almost seven minutes to get on the board, but the Rams managed to climb back from a 12-point deficit to trail by only six at intermission. The Mustangs never relinquished their lead, however, even when the Rams got within two points several times late in the contest. Although Mount Mercy's last field goal came with 4:48 left, Dabroski's clutch foul shooting clinched the win for the Mustangs.

Despite getting outrebounded, 40-34, and shooting just 32 percent from the field, Mount Mercy (4-4) forced 19 turnovers and made 19-of-21 free throw attempts. Dabroski finished 10-for-10 at the line, while junior guard Jessie Dirks went 9-for-9 for the Mustangs. Cornell, on the other hand, struggled from 3-point range and shot 40 percent from the floor. The Rams (1-4) were 2-for-21 from beyond the arc.

Dabroski, who has only missed one free throw all season in 22 attempts, ended up with 14 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and three steals. Dirks also scored 14 points and grabbed four boards. Junior guard Becky Schneider nailed three huge 3-pointers and finished with nine points off the bench. Senior forward Chelsie Patik also added nine points and a pair of steals.

Cornell's Melanie Duplessis led all scorers with 15 points and had four assists. Kristin Paczosa recorded a double-double with 11 points points and 13 rebounds. Charlotte Milas also chipped in 11 points, Tiffany Cowan 10 points and seve boards.

Mount Mercy travels to Winona, Minn., to take on NCAA Division II Winona State University (Minn.) on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. The Mustangs finish up the week against intra-city rival Coe College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Please note that tip-off at Coe has been moved up from 6:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. this weekend.
