OSKALOOSA,
Iowa -- A poor shooting performance from the free throw line and
3-point range, as well as a hefty rebounding deficit, cost the
Mount Mercy College women's basketball team in a 70-54 loss to
William Penn University on Wednesday at Penn Gymnasium.
The Mustangs
(10-18, 7-8 MCC), who were outrebounded, 49-24, were only 6-of-16
from the foul line and 4-of-20 from beyond the arc. The Lady Statesmen
(15-15, 6-10 MCC) overcame 28 turnovers by hitting all 16 of their
free throws and scoring 17 second-chance points thanks to 20 offensive
rebounds. Mount Mercy's loss and Waldorf College's victory over
Clarke College ended any hopes of hosting an MCC tournament quarterfinal
next week.
Junior forward
Katie Manning led the Mustangs with 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting
from the floor. Senior forward Chelsie Patik reached double figures
for the fifth straight game, scoring 12 points while posting a
team-high four rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Jessie
Dirks also snagged four boards. Junior guard Becky Schneider added
eight points and freshman guard Kadie Carman a game-high five
steals off the bench.
Ashley McClure
tallied 18 points, Veronica Henton 16, and Rashawn Rupe 10 to
lead the Lady Statesmen. Christa Subbert hauled down a game-high
10 rebounds and dished out four assists while Henton added seven
boards and three steals.
Mount Mercy
and Viterbo University (Wis.) (12-17, 7-8 MCC) square off in their
regular season finale on Saturday at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium in La
Crosse, Wis. Pairings for the 2008 Midwest Collegiate Conference
Women's Basketball Tournament will be announced upon the completion
of Saturday's league matchups.
