Bees sting Mustangs in second half

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Mount Mercy College shot 54.2 percent from the floor in the opening period, but 15th-ranked St. Ambrose University rebounded from a three-point halftime deficit to defeat the Mustangs, 83-66, in Midwest Collegiate Conference women's basketball Saturday at Hennessey Recreation Center.

The league-leading Queen Bees (23-4, 12-1 MCC) led, 28-16, with 7:59 to go in the first period until the Mustangs (8-17, 5-7 MCC), who were 6-of-12 from 3-point range in the half, ended the stanza with a 20-5 run to take a 36-33 lead at intermission. St. Ambrose scored the first seven points of the second period and never trailed again, leading by as many as 26 en route to their second win over Mount Mercy this season.

Junior guard Kelli Dabroski shared game-high honors with 17 points. Senior forward Chelsie Patik added 15 points, junior guard Jessie Dirks nailed four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Dabroski also snagged a team-high six rebounds and freshman guard Heather Bachman tied a season high with five boards. Freshman guard Kadie Carman dealt five of Mount Mercy's 16 assists.

Jenny Clark led six Queen Bees in double figures with 17 points. Ali Dolphin and Amy Fulfs each scored 12 points, Mary Burmeister 11, and Dara Widdop and Callie Sobaski 10 apiece. Dolphin's 10 rebounds also led St. Ambrose to a 43-27 advantage on the glass. Sobaski grabbed nine boards, Clark and Widdop six each. Clark dished out a game-high nine assists and collected three steals, while Dolphin had seven assists and three thefts.

Mount Mercy visits Clarke College (1-25, 0-12 MCC) on Wednesday, taking on the Crusaders at 5:30 p.m. at the Kehl Center in Dubuque, Iowa. The Mustangs host Ashford University (9-16, 3-9 MCC) in their final regular season home game on Saturday. Tip-off on Seniors Day is 1:00 p.m. at Hennessey.
