“The
Bible can be truly understood only by adults. This places a particular
responsibility on us as adult Catholics. As you know, until the
Second Vatican Council, Catholics were not encouraged to read
the Bible. Nor was there an emphasis on adult religious education.
As a result, most adult Roman Catholics do not know how to read
the Bible, nor do they know what the Catholic Church teaches about
how to understand the revelation that Scripture contains”
(from the Introduction of Scripture: Nourished by the Word by
Margaret Nutting Ralph, Ph.D.).
This workshop is recommended for adults of all faiths ages 18
and up who want to appreciate the role of the Bible in their Christian
lives.
Persons who attend all five sessions will receive a document certifying
their participation.
Bill Mulcahey, S.S.L., Director of Campus Ministry at Mount Mercy
College, will present these classes on the Bible as a Work of
Mercy. His hope is that “the treasures of the Bible may
be opened up more lavishly, so that richer fare may be provided
for the faithful at the table of God’s Word” (Constitution
on the Sacred Liturgy, 51).
Bill teaches as an adjunct professor of Religious Studies at Mount
Mercy College. He has taught in the Archdiocesan Lay Formation
program and the Hispanic Permanent Diaconate program’s formation
classes. Before moving to Cedar Rapids in 2002, Bill and his family
lived in Central and South America for fifteen years where he
divided his time working in and forming comunidades de base cristianas
(basic Christian communities) and teaching and serving as an administrator
in universities and seminaries in Panama, Ecuador, and Nicaragua.
Bill received his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical
Biblical Institute, Rome, Italy. He and his family are members
of St. Matthew Parish in Cedar Rapids.
