Career Exploration
Sometimes students come to college unsure of career goals or what their college major should be. Maybe you thought you knew what you wanted to major in, but now you’re just not sure. If you are in either of these situations, it may be helpful for you to talk with the career counselor at Mount Mercy. You can learn about your interests and strengths. You may want to complete a career assessment inventory or a personality preference profile. Or you may want to take the one credit course Career Exploration and Self-Discovery, offered each semester, (CD004). Feeling confident with your career choice will help you be more focused and successful in college.

Job Seeking
At some time during college nearly all students look for a job—whether it be part-time while in school, full-time after graduation or an internship to complete degree requirements. Efficient job hunting skills are essential in finding jobs today. Let us help you learn these skills that you will use throughout your lifetime. The Career Development office has numerous resources to help you with your search. You may also check the bulletin board with job postings on the first floor of McAuley across from the switchboard. Here you will find a variety of jobs including local families looking for an occasional babysitter. These job postings are also available on the Mount Mercy on Job Trek.

Resume and Cover Letter Critiquing—Job Interviews
The Career Services Director is available on a daily basis to help you prepare a cover letter, résumé or thank you letter. Take advantage of this service to learn the best way to present yourself on paper to prospective employers. Presenting yourself in person during an interview is often a nerve-wracking experience. Attending a mock-interview event or working one-on-one with the Career Services Director can help you prepare for that all-important interview.

Our informal career resource library is located in 104 McAuley. We have employer directories, notebooks of job openings and registration forms for graduate school exams.

Special Career Workshops and Career Fairs
Throughout the year Career Services sponsor workshops for Mount Mercy students on a variety of career related topics. Watch for announcements on these workshops and make plans to attend these informational sessions. These workshops may include an Etiquette Dinner, a panel discussion on job searching by local employers, information on attending graduate school and mock interview sessions. Career Services also sponsor career fairs on campus where employers talk to you about jobs and careers with their company. These career activities are advertised on campus through the Tunnel Talk, bulletin boards and special mailings or stop by the Career Development office to learn about upcoming events.

Graduate School
Some of you may want or need to follow up your Bachelor’s degree with a graduate degree to prepare for your chosen profession. Information on researching graduate school and registering for graduate exams is available through Career Services.
