Emphasis in Special Education
Course Descriptions

The Master’s of Arts Degree in Education with Emphasis in Special Education program is designed to prepare teachers to provide appropriate levels of service to students with disabilities at the preschool, elementary, and secondary levels. Four options are available under this program: Strategist I K-6 endorsement, Strategist I 7-12 endorsement, Strategist II K-12 endorsement, Special Education with no endorsement. The goal of the Master of Arts Degree in Education with Emphasis in Special Education program is to provide teachers with updated research, legal procedures, knowledge, and best practices to be successful with students who struggle to learn.

Masters Program Core (12 hours)*
A three-course core provides a vibrant shared experience for all Master’s in Education students. These courses focus on developing the broader perspectives needed for leadership in the profession. Understanding legal and policy issues, building leadership skills, examining cultural and ethical implications, and applying the tools of investigation are but a few of the outcomes targeted by the program’s core experiences.

All candidates will be allowed to choose from the following four options:

1. Licensure 1 Option: Strategist I K-6
2. Licensure 2 Option: Strategist I 7-12
3. Licensure 3 Option: Strategist II K-12
4. Nonlicensure Option: Master of Arts in Special Education

Strategist I 7-12 (33 total hours)

  SPED 525 Methods & Strategies for the Mild/Moderate 3 credits Learner
  ED 525 Content Area Reading and Writing 3 credits
  SPED 530 Transitions & Career Planning 3 credits
  SPED 601 Student Teaching 3 credits


Strategist II K-12 (35 total hours)

  SPED 530 Transitions & Career Planning 3 credits
  SPED 535 Curriculum & Methods for Strat II 3 credits
  ED 530 Diagnosis & Remediation of Reading Disabilities 3 credits
  SPED 602 Student Teaching 3 credits
  SPED 604 Student Teaching (out of level) 2 credits


M.A. Special Education Option (30+ total hours)

1. 9 hours of special education core completed
2. 9+ hours completed in combination of licensure courses or from course below:
