Mount Mercy College Teams With Area Group for Martin Luther
King, Jr. Community-Wide
Day of Service
CEDAR
RAPIDS, Iowa (January 18, 2008) – Local groups, including
Mount Mercy College and the Weed and Seed Initiative of the Community
Corrections Improvement Association (CCIA), have come together
to organize a Martin Luther King, Jr. Community-Wide Day of Service.
The event will be held
on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, and will emphasize the
day as a “Day On, Not a Day Off.” The “day on”
is an effort to get volunteers involved since many businesses
and schools close on Martin Luther King Day.
The Community-Wide
Day of Service will kick off on Monday at the Hennessey Recreation
Center on the Mount Mercy College campus, 1330 Elmhurst Drive
N.E., in Cedar Rapids. Volunteers can register from 12:00 p.m.
until 1:30 p.m. The opening celebration will begin at 1:30 p.m.
and will feature a welcome by Mount Mercy College President Christopher
Blake, a proclamation from Cedar Rapids Mayor Kay Halloran, remarks
from representatives of Senator Tom Harkin, Representative and
Dave Loebsack, and President of the local chapter of the NAACP
Dedric Doolin.
At 2:00 p.m.,
volunteers will be assigned to groups and will then travel to
one of at least 15 not-for-profit agency sites including at shelters,
after-school programs and food pantries. Some of the work that
the volunteers do will include general cleaning, painting, and
working with children. Volunteers are scheduled to work at the
sites until 5:00 p.m.
Located
in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Mount Mercy College is a Catholic College
