CEDAR
RAPIDS, Iowa (January 27, 2008) – As part of a collaboration
between Mount Mercy College, Grinnell College and the University
of Northern Iowa, Dr. Luis Graça and Marta de Menezes will
host an interdisciplinary discussion about art and biology on
Friday, February 8 in Betty Cherry Heritage Hall in McAuley Hall
on the Mount Mercy College campus. de Menezes, an internationally
know Portuguese artist who has been developing her work exploring
the intersection of art and biology, and Graça, a London
biologist who has collaborated with artists, will present different
artistic approaches developing worldwide in relation to art and
biology, and their implications.
The artist
talk, slated to begin at 7:30 p.m., will follow a 5:00 p.m. reception
to welcome Graça and de Menezes, along with other Portuguese
artists Antonio Caramelo, Rodrigo Oliveira, Miguel Palma and Rui
Valerio. The reception and interdisciplinary discussion are part
of an exhibit that will be on display from February 8 through
March 14 in the Janalyn Hanson White Gallery on the Mount Mercy
College campus. The reception, discuss and exhibit are free and

Mount Mercy
College Professor of Art Jane Gilmor and Grinnell College’s
Dr. Leslie Wright traveled to Portugal to curate this interdisciplinary
exhibit and lecture series titled Where Are You From? Contemporary
Art From Portugal. Mount Mercy’s exhibition, On the Edge
– In the Middle: New Portuguese Art I augments Grinnell
College’s exhibit with new media works. The exhibit explores
the relationships between the Midwest and Portugal as “periphery”
locations for artists: both have active arts and culture scenes
but not in the traditional cultural centers of New York, London,
or Berlin. Each exhibit features Antonio Caramelo, Miguel Palma,
Marta de Menezes, Rodrigo Oliveira and Rui Valerio, Portuguese
artists working in video, installation, and digital media
