Mount Mercy College’s SIFE Team Wins Icky Award
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (January 23, 2008) – Mount Mercy College’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team spearheaded a collaborative program in 2007, “GOT on Boards,” and has been recognized by the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance with a Cultural Corridor Innovative Excellence Award, nicknamed the “Icky Award.” “GOT on Boards” and its sponsoring organizations were honored for innovation and excellence in the educational programming category during the Icky Awards ceremony on January 22.

Sponsored by the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance (ICCA), the Icky Awards recognize the best in arts and culture programming for 2007 across the Corridor as voted by members of ICCA. “GOT on Boards,” a program promoting skill development and professional growth for new members of non-profit boards, was a collaboration between Mount Mercy College’s SIFE Team, Access Iowa, Linn County Nonprofit Resource Center, United Way of East Central Iowa Young Leaders Society, The James Gang, United Way of Johnson County, and Leadership for Five Seasons.

SIFE, the largest student organization in the world, provides students the opportunity to make a difference by developing leadership skills through learning, practicing, and teaching the principles of the free enterprise system. During the 2006-07 school year the Mount Mercy SIFE team completed 47 service projects, volunteered more than 2,050 hours and taught more than 6,719 people free enterprise principles and the skills necessary to be successful in the global marketplace. The students worked with several elementary, middle and high schools, children of all age groups, seniors, and community organizations in Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities.
