Mount Mercy College Announces New Majors in Communication,
Education and Management
CEDAR
RAPIDS, Iowa (February 20, 2008) – Mount Mercy College has
added six new majors to its curriculum. The new majors include
Communication Studies, Journalism, Multi-Media Design, Public
Relations, Management Information Systems (MIS), and Early Childhood
PreK-Grade 3 as a stand-alone licensure area. The new majors are
available to students beginning in the 2008-2009 academic school
year.
The Communication
Studies, Journalism, Multi-Media Design, and Public Relations
majors offer clearer identity and greater visibility to what previously
were four separate concentrations within a single major in the
Communication Department. While requirements within each area
have not changed, the distinct identification of four specialized
majors will more clearly convey graduates’ areas of specialization.
Management
Information Systems (MIS) is a multi-disciplinary major that provides
students with a solid background for managing complex information
technology projects while also preparing them for the quantitative
and business skills demanded in a rapidly developing field. MIS
majors complete a set of computer science, mathematics, and business
courses.
The Early
Childhood PreK-Grade 3 major enhances the options for prospective
early childhood educators by offering a focused, stand-alone endorsement
that does not require the full elementary education licensure.
Design of the major integrates collaboration with Kirkwood Community
College and provides financial incentives for preschool or childcare
employees receiving scholarships through Iowa’s T.E.A.C.H.
Early Childhood program.
“Mount
Mercy College is committed to maintaining a strong and vibrant
educational program,” says Provost and Vice President of
Academic Affairs Dr. John P. Marsden, “Our faculty has worked
diligently and creatively to introduce timely new offerings that
serve student needs and respond to emerging workforce priorities.”
Located in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa Mount Mercy College is a Catholic College providing
student-focused baccalaureate education in the spirit of the Sisters
of Mercy.
