Mount Mercy College’s SIFE Team to Host Entrepreneur Day Camp
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (February 21, 2008) – Mount Mercy College’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team will host an Entrepreneur Day Camp for local area 5th grade students on Saturday, February 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Flaherty Community Room in Basile Hall on the Mount Mercy campus.

Students from Arthur Elementary School, Erskine Elementary School, Prairie Crest Elementary School, Prairie Heights Elementary School and Prairie Ridge Elementary School have been invited to take part in the Entrepreneur Day Camp. During the course of the day the students will hear from several business professionals regarding what an entrepreneur is, what is involved in starting a business, start-up business expenses, budgeting, people skills and leadership, and advertising. Students will form teams, develop a business idea, divide management/leadership responsibilities among members of their team, develop a budget and determine where to spend the “money” they have to start their business, and make their own “TV commercial” to advertise their business, product or service.

Community members working with the students throughout the day include Julie Hardin, owner of Jule's Bakery; Tony Dickinson, Manager, Cross-Sell Programs Wells Fargo Financial Retail Services; Kevin King, Market Manager of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage; and Steve Merrick, Director of Business Development from Metro Studios.

SIFE, the largest student organization in the world, provides students the opportunity to make a difference by developing leadership skills through learning, practicing, and teaching the principles of the free enterprise system. During the 2006-07 school year the Mount Mercy SIFE team completed 47 service projects, volunteered more than 2,050 hours and taught more than 6,719 people free enterprise principles and the skills necessary to be successful in the global marketplace. The students worked with several elementary, middle and high schools, children of all age groups, seniors, and community organizations in Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities.
