Portuguese Artists to Discuss Works at Mount Mercy
CEDAR
RAPIDS, Iowa (March 14, 2008) – As part of a collaboration
between Mount Mercy College, Grinnell College and the University
of Northern Iowa, Portuguese artists Antonio Pinto, Teresa Furtado
and Paula Reaes Pinto will discuss their works at Mount Mercy
College on Thursday, March 27 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Betty
Cherry Heritage Hall on the Mount Mercy campus.
The artist
discussion will follow a 5:00 p.m. reception for the Portuguese
artists, also held in Betty Cherry Heritage Hall. The reception
and discussion are being held in conjunction with an exhibit that
will be on display in the Janalyn Hanson White Gallery on the
Mount Mercy College campus from March 27 to April 11. The reception,
discussion and exhibit are free and open to the public.
The Portuguese
artists and their exhibits use landscape as a uniting concept.
Paula Reaes Pinto creates community-based sculpture in the rapidly
disappearing landscape of Portugal’s rural salt mines. Teresa
Furtado deconstructs Portuguese fairy tales to expose their gender-bias.
Antonio Pinto’s one-minute video studies, Environmental
Fictions, seek to connect experience of our bodies with perceptions
of our external environment.
Mount Mercy
College Professor of Art Jane Gilmor and Grinnell College’s
Dr. Leslie Wright traveled to Portugal to curate this interdisciplinary
exhibit and lecture series titled Where Are You From? Contemporary
Art From Portugal. Mount Mercy’s exhibit, On the Edge –
In the Middle: New Portuguese Art II augments Grinnell College’s
exhibit with new media works. The exhibit explores the relationships
between the Midwest and Portugal as “periphery” locations
for artists: both have active arts and culture scenes but not
in the traditional cultural centers of New York, London, or Berlin.
