Author Joy Castro to Visit Mount Mercy College
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (March 20, 2008) – Joy Castro,
author of The Truth Book: Escaping a Childhood of Abuse Among
Jehovah’s Witnesses (Arcade Publishing), will host a question
and answer session at 3:30 p.m. on April 10 in Mount Mercy’s
Flaherty Community Room, Basile Hall. Castro will read from her
works at Mount Mercy on April 10 at 7:30 p.m., also in Flaherty
Community Room. The question and answer session and the reading
are both free and open to the public.
Castro is
a member of the faculty of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
teaching in the English Department and the Institute for Ethnic
Studies. Her focus is on women’s literature, race and gender
issues, literary modernism and the Harlem Renaissance. In 2005,
Castro published her autobiography, The Truth Book: Escaping a
Childhood of Abuse Among Jehovah’s Witnesses. The book describes
Castro’s abusive childhood and challenges the religious
organization that permits abuses to continue within its communities
