Mount Mercy College, Kirkwood Community College to
Collaborate on Jones Regional Education Center
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (December 20, 2007) – Mount
Mercy College has announced that it will be the partner of choice
with Kirkwood Community College as the two institutions jointly
collaborate on the development of the Jones Regional Education
Center located near Monticello, Iowa. The Center will offer college
credit courses for high school students, as well as other alternative
high school programs including pre-employment training options,
and GED and college preparation.
Mount Mercy
College will serve as the only four-year institution offering
courses at the new Center, which will begin construction in the
summer of 2008. The Center is expected to be completed by August
of 2009. Some details are still being worked out, including which
junior and senior courses from Mount Mercy’s curriculum
will be available and which Mount Mercy faculty will teach at
the new Center. Educational partners in the development of the
Center also include the following school districts: Anamosa, Cascade/Western
Dubuque, Central City, Maquoketa Valley, Midland Monticello, Olin,
and Springville. Other partners include the City of Monticello,
and the Lloyd Welter family of Monticello who donated eight acres
of land south of Monticello on which the Center will be built.
“Mount
Mercy College and Kirkwood Community College respect and support
each other’s institutional missions to serve the people
of Iowa and beyond,” says Mount Mercy College President
Christopher Blake. “Both schools serve local communities
and believe in empowering eastern Iowans’ lives through
educational opportunities. This collaboration represents the best
ideals of partnership: a public, two year community and a private,
faith-based four-year institution, sharing goals and systems of
delivering education.”
